Kayla is currently in the final year of her undergraduate degree at Western University (Brescia University College campus). She will graduate with an Honours Specialization in Sociology (focus on Criminal Justice) and a Major in Psychology.
Kayla has a wide variety of experience, both paid and volunteer, working in the mental health field. She worked for the Animal and Interpersonal Abuse Research Group (AIPARG) as a Research Assistant; worked as a Wellness Peer on campus, supporting students with mild to moderate mental health concerns; and has recently begun volunteering with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Crisis Support Line.
Kayla has participated in several leadership experiences including helping to organize the Bell Let’s Talk Day on Brescia’s Campus; being a peer mentor to incoming first-year students navigating university for the first time; conducting a podcast with Brescia’s President titled “What Does it Mean to Be Ethical and Make Ethical Decisions on a Daily Basis”; being a conference assistant for a global Qualitative Analysis conference in the field of Sociology; and working as a Project Lead, as a summer intern with Canada Life to help determine important relationship building and business growth strategies and tactics within Advisor communities.
Kayla has obtained mental health training and certification in Gender Based Violence Response and Prevention; Wellness Peer Mental Health Support Training; Upstanding & Bystander training; and Safe Talk Certification (Suicide Prevention). She will be continuing to obtain additional training and professional development through her volunteer work with the CMHA.
Kayla’s next education step is to obtain a Master’s Degree to become a clinician and advocate, with the long-term goal of working with individuals who have survived the sex trafficking industry and those who have experienced intimate partner violence.
Kayla’s hobbies and interests include white water canoeing & camping; swimming; reading & watching movies; singing and spending quality time with friends and family.
